A Quick, Heartbreaking Thought
In the car on the way to school, I was playing Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" at high volume. My two kids gazing out the window. Halfway through the song, my 8-year-old son's face in the rearview...tearstained and angst-ridden.
"Mom, can you please play another song? This one is so beautiful and so sad. Please."
What the fuck just happened there?
Sometimes I feel like I am free-falling through my life and only my children are there to catch me.

Another Pink Floyd children's story: just before our oldest daughter moved off to college, I passed her closed bedroom door one night and heard, on the other side, her soft soprano singing "Wish You Were Here" while she strummed an accoustic guitar. Not only had she taught herself to play guitar, but she had inherited my tastes in popular music.
It was then, at that very moment, that I realized it was time for her to leave us.
